VertiGarden Module

VertiGarden Module

Frequently Asked Questions

How Big is a VertiGarden Module?
Each module is 40 cm wide, 50cm high, and 9cm deep, covering an area of 0.2 m².

What is included with my VertiGarden?
Each module comes with: plastic grow tray and lid encased in a metal frame, an irrigation string, universal brackets, screws, wall plugs, irrigation connectors and full planting and assembly instructions.

How do I hang up my VertiGarden?
Each module comes with: plastic grow tray and lid encased in a metal frame, an irrigation string, universal brackets, screws, wall plugs, irrigation connectors and full planting and assembly instructions. It's simple to hang your module up - using the screws and brackets provided, attach them to the wall 225mm apart on a horizontal line. Hang the module off the brackets on the horizontal cross bar of the metal frame.

How much does a planted VertiGarden module weigh?
When fully planted and watered, the most a module can weigh is 10kg.

Is the water tank included in the price?
No, the water tank is purchased separately. The water tank is only good enough for up to 2 modules. For bigger displays, irrigation kits can be purchased separately.

I would like to cover a wall measuring *m x*m, how many modules do I need?
We allow spacing between each module, to allow for manoeuvrability in hanging and dismantling. To figure out how many modules you'd need, it is a simple division as follows:
Width /44 = x modules wide = a
Height/52 = x modules high = b
Total modules needed = a x b

How do I water my VertiGarden?
When growing and establishing the plants in the module, laid flat in the horizontal position, the plants are easily watered over-head with a watering can. Once the VertiGarden is hung in the Vertical Position, you can then make use of the internal irrigation system included with each module, as explained in more detail below.
The modular system we use has an irrigation line which is bedded in to the compost when you put your VertiGarden together. This irrigation "string" is a 4.6 pipe with 8 drippers that supply water directly to the roots. Modules can be linked together so the water flows from one module to another. There needs to be a water supply to this internal system. For larger displays, we use an irrigation kit to connect a pressure regulated (to 1.5 bar) water supply directly to the internal irrigation string. We normally suggest that people look at the Micro irrigation kits from Hozelock or Gardena. These kits supply the pressure regulator and fittings required to convert from a normal Tap or Hose to the small bore pipe used in the irrigation. These kits can also be purchased with a timer so you can set it up to water automatically from an outside tap. VertiGarden can supply irrigation kits - entitled Starter Irrigation Kit, Extension Kit, and Professional Kit.

Why can't I use a water tank for a display consisting of more than 2 (at the most 3) modules?
When water goes into the irrigation string(s), it will travel all the way to the bottom where it is then stopped by the end stop. Water then builds back up the pipe, and has enough pressure to push water through the inline drippers. Pressure in the pipe system is greater lower down in the irrigation string. The further the water has to travel, the less the pressure. If there is insufficient pressure in the pipe the top drippers will not perform properly.

Why do I need a pressure regulator for bigger displays?
With the irrigation, it's about finding a happy medium! Too little pressure will result in uneven watering as mentioned above. If connected to mains pressure though, we need a pressure regulator to stop the flow of water being too strong. If the pressure is very high - your Vertigarden wall will turn into a waterfall, and basically flush the compost and plants out. A pressure regulator ensures that there is enough pressure to water the plants effectively without damaging them.

How often do I need to fill the Water Tank?
The Water Tank is not a reservoir, but rather just a means of getting water into the irrigation pipe. You could think of it like a funnel. The water will drain out of the tank and into the module within half an hour.
You fill the water tank as if you're watering a hanging basket - on a hot day, you may water it twice - you would therefore fill the tank twice.

How many liters of Water does the tank hold?
The water tank holds 4.5 liters.

What can I plant in my VertiGarden?
Any plant with a good spreading habit will flourish in a VertiGarden. A general rule would be "if it works in your garden at home, it will work in a VertiGarden". This helps in the sense that different countries have different conditions - it's hard to say what works here in England is the best thing for a colder winter in Norway.
We would also advise against anything too trailing, as it will suffocate the plants below , as well as leave the top of the module "bald".

Some suggestions we offer are below:

Can I use VertiGarden Indoors?
We do not have vast experience in internal applications however it has been done by some of our customers. For Interior walls, you would plant the VertiGarden modules up exactly the same as usual, the only difference being that you would use indoor plants, and then water and put lights on them accordingly. The main thing to remember is that indoor plants have different requirements. If you're doing a mixed wall, it's important they have similar water and light needs.
The other thing to consider indoors is that excess water will still drain out the module so you will need a method to catch this (eg a gutter within a frame around the display).

How Long will my VertiGarden modules last?
The plastic manufacturer has given a lifespan of 3-5 years. We have planted and re-planted modules 6 times over 3 years. In this time, those that we haven't treated with great care may get slightly damaged however each part can be purchased separately. The plastic includes a UV stabiliser.

What is the VertiGarden module made of?
The Plastic Raw Material that makes up the modules is a re-processed High Impact Polystyrene material which includes a 3% UV Stabiliser. The average weight of the tray is 210grms.

Can I buy spare parts for my VertiGarden?
Yes, each component of VertiGarden can be purchased separately.
